WAVM Spotlights the Bruins (1995)
It was an exciting and eventful day for four members of the WAVM staff on Feb. 10.
The station was invited to a (Boston) Bruins' morning practice session in Boston Garden with an opportunity to interview players for a special production, "WAVM: Up Close With The Boston Bruins."
The show will air in early March on WAVM-TV 61.
"It was a thrill just to be down on the ice and so close to the players," said Katie McCarthy, who got to meet her favorite Bruin Adam Oates and had her picture taken with him. Katie interviewed star defenseman, Ray Bourque, for the special.
WAVM sports director, Mike Guiney, admitted being nervous during the interviews, but he felt that it was a privilege to have had an opportunity to visit the old Garden during its last season and to have an opportunity to interview such Bruin greats as Don Sweeney and Captain Cam Neely.
"The players were very professional and willing to talk to us," said Guiney. "They didn't look upon us as just kids. It was really fun."
WAVM General Manager Matt McCall handeld all the video work and taped most of the practice session and the interviews. "I got a lot of great footage for the special which will feature practice and the interviews, especially favorite Brian Lacher, the team's new goalie.
Bill West, WAVM's other sports coordinator enjoyed interviewing Adam Oates and goalie Brian Lacher. He agreed with Mike Guiney that the players were great during the interviews. Bill got a bit of a surprise when Brian Lacher, coming off the ice, flipped him his stick and goalie maks and asked him to keep an eye on them for him while he signed an autograph.
It was a wonderful experience for the WAVM staffers and the high schoolers handled the task like experienced professionals.
